A conversation with Dr. Jeff Knight on Awesome Autism Tools
When a parent first hears the word “autism,” the world can feel like it’s spinning. Therapists, specialists, opinions, recommendations — it all rushes in at once, and the path forward isn’t always clear. As a coach who works with nonspeakers and their families, I hear this overwhelm constantly. So when I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Jeff Knight, a chiropractor and cellular healing coach who has been guiding families through holistic autism support for over a decade, I knew this conversation needed to be shared.
What unfolded was a powerful discussion about hidden stressors, the body’s incredible capacity to heal, and why so many of our kids are carrying invisible weight we never knew was there.
Here’s what every nonspeaker parent — and really, every autism parent — needs to know.
Meet Dr. Jeff Knight
Based in Utah, Dr. Jeff Knight is a doctor of chiropractic, husband, and father of six. Since 2014, he’s been working with families of children on the autism spectrum, eventually expanding his practice to coach families across the country in cellular healing and detoxification.
His role, as he describes it, is to complement the wonderful work parents are already doing — adding a piece of the puzzle that often goes overlooked in traditional autism care.
Where to Start When You Feel Overwhelmed
One of the first questions I asked Dr. Knight was the question so many newly-diagnosed parents are silently screaming: Where do I even begin?
His advice was beautifully grounded:
“Figure out your health philosophy first.”
Are you drawn to a more mechanical, allopathic view of healthcare? Or does a holistic, natural approach resonate more deeply with your spirit? There’s no wrong answer — but choosing your lens helps bring peace and direction.
He also offered something I deeply believe in:
“Trust that mother’s intuition. Trust that father’s intuition. It’s a key piece of having stewardship over the children we have.”
So many parents come to me feeling unheard by traditional doctors. Dr. Knight reminded us that our intuition is not a bug — it’s a feature. It’s often the Spirit whispering exactly where our child needs us to look next.
The Hidden Role of Mold Toxicity
Mold is one of the most underestimated triggers Dr. Knight sees in his practice. And it doesn’t only show up in humid climates — even dry-climate homes (like his own in Utah) can harbor mold from:
- Water damage from leaks or storms
- Hidden moisture behind refrigerators and appliances
- Old school buildings or daycare facilities
- Even your car (yes, really!)
Signs Mold Might Be Affecting Your Family:
- 🌫️ Chronic fatigue or unexplained exhaustion
- 🌿 Eczema or unexplained skin issues
- 🤧 Catching every cold and flu that comes around
- 🩺 High blood pressure or cardiovascular issues
- 🤕 Frequent headaches
Here’s the fascinating part: mold affects every person differently. One family member might have severe symptoms while another seems unfazed. Dr. Knight explained that this often comes down to genetics and how efficiently each person’s body can detoxify naturally.
For our kids on the spectrum, this is critical. Many autistic children — especially nonspeakers — already struggle with natural detoxification pathways. When mold (or any toxin) is added to the load, their bodies have an even harder time eliminating it.
Drainage First, Detox Second
One of the most important takeaways from our conversation was this principle:
“You have to open the drainage pathways before you start detoxing.”
Drainage refers to your body’s natural ability to eliminate waste — through bowel movements, urine, sweat, and lymphatic flow. If those pathways aren’t flowing well, mobilizing toxins becomes a game of “musical chairs” where toxins simply move from one part of the body to another instead of exiting.
For our nonspeaker kids whose drainage may already be compromised, this step isn’t optional — it’s foundational.
“If You Have a Pulse, You Probably Have a Parasite”
I’ll admit — when Dr. Knight shared this joke from a parasite expert he heard at a conference, I laughed and cringed at the same time. But the message is important: parasites are far more common than most of us realize.
We typically associate parasites with travel, sushi, undercooked meat, or third-world countries. But the truth is, they’re everywhere — in our food supply, our water, even our vegetables.
Common (and Surprising) Signs of Parasites:
- 🦷 Grinding teeth at night
- (GROSS… )Skin issues or visible movement under the skin
- 😴 Chronic fatigue
- 🍣 Frequent consumption of raw fish, rare meat, or pork
- 🤢 Digestive distress (though not always present!)
How to Test for Parasites
Dr. Knight explained that traditional stool tests don’t always catch parasites — likening it to fishing in a lake on a slow day. Just because you didn’t catch a fish doesn’t mean the lake is empty.
A more reliable indicator? A simple CBC (Complete Blood Count) blood test. Specifically, look at these two white blood cell markers:
- Eosinophils — Should ideally be 3% or lower. Higher levels can indicate parasites or food sensitivities.
- Basophils — Should be 1% or lower. Higher levels are a strong clue for parasites.
For families he works with, Dr. Knight often takes a plan for the worst-case scenario approach — assuming parasites are present and gently supporting the body to eliminate them through targeted herbs and protocols.
How Dr. Knight Works With Families Across the Country
One of the most beautiful parts of our conversation was learning how Dr. Knight serves families remotely. Using muscle testing from a distance, he can:
- Conduct full-body scans to identify stressed organs and glands
- Prioritize what the body needs most — parasites, heavy metals, chemicals, etc.
- Customize protocols based on what each unique child needs
His system is built with safety measures baked in — so even families who can’t access expensive labs still receive deeply personalized care.
A Story That Gave Me Chills
I asked Dr. Knight to share a favorite story from his practice, and what he shared brought tears to my eyes.
A 27-year-old young man with autism and a secondary diagnosis of schizophrenia had been living as a hermit in his parents’ home. His mother recently told Dr. Knight:
“You saved my son’s life. My son was suicidal before we came to see you five years ago.”
After working with Dr. Knight through cellular healing and detoxification, this young man:
- Began coming out of his room and spending time with family
- Went on errands with his mother
- Improved from speaking 2–3 word phrases to full sentences
- Started sharing his feelings and expressing himself
This is what becomes possible when we lighten the load on the body. This is why this work matters.
The Backpack of Bricks Analogy
One of my favorite moments in our conversation was when Dr. Knight described the experience of so many of our kids:
“Imagine your child on the spectrum with a backpack full of bricks. It’s heavy. It’s weighing them down. They get frustrated. It affects every area of their life.”
His work is about removing those bricks — one by one — so the body can do what it was designed to do: heal, regulate, and thrive.
Cellular healing doesn’t replace speech therapy, OT, or ABA. Instead, it enhances them — because a body that’s no longer fighting hidden toxins has so much more energy available for growth, connection, and communication.
Generational Toxicity: A Surprising Truth
Toward the end of our conversation, Dr. Knight introduced a concept that floored me: generational toxicity.
Toxins from previous generations — yes, even from our grandmothers — can be passed down through the womb. He referenced the DRASH study in Europe, which found:
The number of silver (mercury) fillings in a mother’s mouth had a direct correlation to how much mercury was found in her child’s brain.
This isn’t about blame. It’s about awareness. And it’s about hope — because once we know, we can do something about it.
Dr. Knight’s Pre-Pregnancy Recommendation:
If you’re a newlywed couple or planning to grow your family, consider doing a 6-month cellular detox before conception. Supporting your own cells now means a healthier foundation for your future children.
Your Body Is Designed to Heal
Perhaps the most empowering message from our entire conversation was this reminder:
“The body is designed to thrive. It’s designed to be self-healing. It’s designed to be self-regulating. We just have to stop and ask — what’s interfering?”
Whether you’re a nonspeaker parent, a newly-diagnosed family, or someone who has been on this journey for years — please hear this: your child’s body is doing the best it can with what it has. Our role isn’t to fix them. It’s to gently remove what’s in the way.
