Discovering Joy Bubbles and Why This Film Stayed With Me

One of the unexpected gifts for me at Sundance was a documentary called Joybubbles.

I really loved it. It was about a blind man who became known for doing unusual things with the telephone system years ago, but what stayed with me was not just the quirky parts of his story. It was his heart. It was the way he experienced the world. And honestly, it made me think about communication, kindness, and the Hill.

One part of the film that especially stood out to me was when he talked about a near-death experience and described what he called “bubbles of love.” That really caught my attention because I have heard things from children about the Hill that feel similar. It just felt familiar to me in a deep way.

What It Made Me Think About

There were a few other parts of the film that really moved me.

I was touched by the way he sought out comfort and healing. He would go to the library and spend time with Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, which I found so tender. He knew what helped him feel safe and seen, and he kept returning to it.

Later in life, he also created this beautiful way of reaching people through recorded phone messages. It honestly felt a little bit like an early podcast. He used his voice to encourage people, connect with strangers, and spread kindness. I loved that so much.

Why Accessibility Matters So Much

Another thing I appreciated at the screening was the audio description option for blind viewers. I had never really understood how helpful that could be until then.  It is actually available for most movies on streaming platforms!

It made me think about how many simple tools or supports are out there that people just do not know about. And once you do know, it can open up so much more access and connection for someone.

That was one of the big takeaways for me from this film. Communication matters. Accessibility matters. And every person deserves to be seen as more than their limitations.

Joybubbles was such a beautiful example of that.

He reminds me that people are often far more powerful, deep, and capable than the world realizes.
